Become an Expert in Legal Research – Join the GGSL PhD Programme
Are you ready to take your legal research to the highest level? The Graduate School of the Faculty of Law (GGSL) at the University of Groningen offers an inspiring, internationally oriented PhD programme for ambitious researchers. In collaboration with the University of Groningen Graduate School (GGS), we provide a comprehensive training programme that supports you from day one through to the successful defence of your thesis.
Tailored Training for Every Stage
Throughout your PhD, you will follow courses that match your research phase and interests. The GGS offers interdisciplinary modules relevant to all PhD candidates, while the GGSL provides specialised training designed specifically for legal researchers.
A Supportive and Stimulating Research Environment
At GGSL, you become part of a vibrant academic community where PhD candidates, senior researchers, and academic staff connect, collaborate, and inspire one another. We encourage critical reflection, interdisciplinary perspectives, and the open exchange of ideas – all key elements of your journey as a researcher.
Start Strong, Stay Supported
In the first three months, you will develop a solid research proposal, which – in addition to being reviewed by your supervisor and promotor – must be approved by the Faculty’s Scientific and Ethics Committee. During this initial phase, you are typically exempt from teaching duties, allowing you to focus fully on your research.
Clear Milestones and Personal Guidance
Toward the end of your first year, the GGSL Director will assess your progress based on your Training and Supervision Plan (TSP), your approved research proposal, and your initial output (e.g. a chapter, article, or report). Together with your supervisors, you’ll participate in a review meeting to reflect on achievements and address any challenges. Based on this evaluation, a decision is made about the continuation of your PhD project.
Grow as a Researcher
Throughout the programme, you will receive close guidance from your promotor and supervisor and be actively involved in the broader research community. You’ll connect with fellow PhD researchers, collaborate across disciplines, attend and present at (inter)national conferences, and be encouraged to publish in academic journals.
Your Experience Matters
Every two years, the University of Groningen conducts a university-wide survey to assess PhD candidates’ motivation, satisfaction, and training environment. We use this feedback to continuously improve our support and training.
